Should you take a second internship

Should you take a second internship Tips From an Orange County College Consultant: 5 Things to Think About Before Doing a Second Internship Tips From an Orange County College Consultant: 5 Things to Think About Before Doing a Second Internship Many students will be excited to have the opportunity to work as an intern while they are an undergraduate. Although many internships are unpaid, they can provide valuable work experience and help students get a foot in the door with their favorite company. The first time around most students will need enough elective units that they can justify spending part of their summer without getting paid. However, taking a second internship the following summer can be subject to different circumstances. Perhaps the student no longer needs the units or maybe they simply need to earn some money to subsidize the cost of ever increasing post-secondary education. Whatever their personal circumstances might be, it’s prudent to think about several things before agreeing to a second internship (READ: Unpaid Internships: Weighing the Options). 1. Will this internship provide additional work experience? Some students may be seeking a second internship because they learn that their original choice of major was not a good fit. In this case, an additional internship in a new field may provide experience valuable enough to be worth the effort. Spending a month or so working in the field is a great way to determine whether or not a specific career goal is a good idea. If a second internship will provide an entirely different skill set upon completion, it may very well be worth it paid or unpaid. 2. Is the internship paid at minimum wage or above? Another thing students should ask themselves is if they will earn any money over the summer. If the internship is a paid opportunity at minimum wage or above, it sounds like a good idea. Students who need to make money could either make it doing something they find especially dry or while learning valuable job skills. Paid internships are a good option. Unfortunately, the majority of undergraduate internships are unpaid. In this case, would a second internship in the same field really help the student? If they can still get college credit they actually need or if they are making excellent career connections it may be worth it. However, if its simply a repeat of the first summer, it might end up being a poor use of time. 3. Can the student use it as part of a special project with their school? Students entering specialized fields may be involved in special projects such as independent or collaborative research. If working as an intern can somehow contribute to this project, it might be a very interesting experience overall. Because each student’s situation will be unique in this case, they should ask themselves the following questions. Will their supervising professors support their internship as part of the project? How will they describe or justify their internship within their research paper? Will they receive relevant credit toward their degree? Because there are so many variables when it comes to independent projects it’s a good idea to get something official in writing from the school and the company before proceeding. 4. Is this internship a temp to hire position? Some internships can serve as a temp to hire position. In this case, a second internship might be an excellent idea. If a company is interested in a student who will be graduating in a year and they want to offer them an opportunity to get their foot in the door prior to graduation, they may offer a temp to hire position. Although most of these come after graduation, some companies will recruit students in high demand fields. Having a full time job secured before graduation would be excellent for any student; however, its important to look at the fine print in these types of situations (READ: Why You Should Study Abroad). 5. Can the student get important information in writing? If a student is considering a temp to hire internship or a second internship, its important to make sure they get any important information or guarantees in writing. A company that says they would like to hire a student upon graduation but isnt willing to put it in an official offer may not be in a position to follow through. Verbal agreements generally arent worth much and are undocumented. If a student is truly taking on an internship because they feel they will be hired upon completion, they must absolutely have some sort of written job offer, even if there are contingencies, in writing and signed by a representative of the company authorized to make such a promise. If this is not the situation its better to think about taking the internship on as part of college credit or choosing something else to do over the summer. 7 Ways to Use Movable Guitar Scales to Write Solos and Riffs

7 Ways to Use Movable Guitar Scales to Write Solos and Riffs Sign up successful Start by targeting the notes that are the basis of the key the song is in. For instance, if you’re playing in the key of G Major, playing the G Major scale in different positions on the neck is fun, so you target the note G in different spots on the neck. It is like connecting the dots. Now move the scale up a whole step to the fifth position on the neck but still target the note G. This is a good idea as it frees you up to improvise. Step 2. Move the Basic Scale Patterns Close your eyes and visualize the neck of the guitar and play freely. When you find a pattern you like, move it up a whole step. The reason this works is because there is only two notes difference between G Major and A Major. You will very quickly see that this is both fun and exciting as it opens up new possibilities in your playing to express yourself. If you hit a wrong note simply remove it from your solo or riff idea or slide into the next note using the “wrong note” as a grace note or passing note. Listen carefully for what sounds good. Step 3. Give The Notes Numbers We give each note of the scale a number. For instance in C Major C is 1, D, is 2, E is 3, and so on. Now it is time to begin by playing with the idea of assigning number patterns to each scale and moving the order of the notes around. For instance you might start by playing 1, 3, 5, 2, 1. Then mix it up. Your ears will tell you what works. Step 4. Make Your Guitar Sing Many of my friends and students ask me: how do you make the guitar sing? I like to sing or hum a melody out loud first and then find those notes on the neck of the guitar. It is also useful to go to the piano and find the notes in the scale of G Major or whatever key the song is in. Then sing the melody by picking the notes out on the piano and then transfer it to your guitar! This not only makes your solo more interesting but it helps you improve your ear and song arranging skills at the same time. Step 5 : Riff This Way What is a riff? A riff is a short idea played on the electric guitar that locks in with the beat. Joe Perry of Aerosmith successfully uses riffs to make songs really appeal to his fans. Listen to “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith and you will hear how Joe’s riff makes the song great and propels it forward. A great riff can even double as a hook” that keeps us coming back to the song again. The rule is learn your favorite riff from a song you love to play along to. Take your time and play it correctly even if it takes several days or weeks to master it. Step 6 : Hammer on and Pull Off Use techniques like sliding into a note, hammer ons, and pull offs to increase your tempo with grace and ease. Have your guitar teacher show you how to do this if you are not familiar with the technical aspect of playing hammer ons and pull offs. You don’t have to get it all in one day. Be adventurous and take chances. If you are not on stage it doesn’t matter if you hit a wrong note as this is part of the learning process and good ear training. Next time you have a great idea record it into your iPhone. It may be a million seller and bring joy to everyone in the world. Step 7: Rap to The Beat If all else fails do this: Rap to the beat. Choose some grunting noises or three or four of your favorite words and rap to a drum beat loop on your laptop. Now transfer your rap/grunt sounds to the guitar using any notes you like in first position on the neck. You are now a successful Riffmaster! Opening up to new ideas and new ways makes you a successful learner and guitarist all in one. Never underestimate your ability to learn something new and add it to your list of cool things to do on guitar. James W. teaches guitar, singing, and acting  lessons in Jacksonville, FL. How Often Should You Practice Spanish To Really Improve

How Often Should You Practice Spanish To Really Improve Maile Proctor Not sure if youre practicing Spanish enough to reach your goals? Make sure youre getting enough practice time with these tips from Spanish teacher Emmanuel N The fastest way to learn Spanish is to practice and use the language as much as possible. Think about it, kids go to school five days a week from kindergarten to high school, and they use English constantly. They read, write, and learn new words and vocabulary. In order to learn a new language, you have to practice speaking, writing, and reading. You might be wondering whats the fastest way to learn Spanish, and the answer is that it depends on how often you practice and use the language. So how often do you need to practice in order to improve? My recommendation: Every. Single. Day. Find Time to Practice I realize not everyone is able (or even willing) to practice every day, but it really is the fastest way to learn Spanish. If you want to learn and improve, you need to make a commitment and find time to practice. When it comes to Spanish, just like any other skill, practice is the key to learning. This doesnt mean you need to study constantly or complete limitless assignments and homework. Make Learning Fun Learning Spanish can be fun, and its important to find a study strategy that works for you. Here are two effective learning strategies that you can try. Listen (and sing along if you want) to Spanish songs. Find videos on YouTube that have English translations for the Spanish lyrics. You can also do this yourself: find the Spanish lyrics and use Google to translate the words. This will be easier if you understand Spanish expressions, and the best way to learn this is through conversations. Watch Spanish shows and movies, or English shows and movies that are translated in Spanish. If youre a beginner, turn on the English subtitles to help you follow along. It may be difficult to understand the shows at first since fluent Spanish speakers speak pretty fast, but youll be able to understand more words and phrases as you continue to practice. Find a Teacher I have shared some ideas and suggestions to help you improve your Spanish, but at the end of the day it always helps to have someone to help you study. Not everyone has Spanish-speaking friends or relatives. This is where a Spanish  tutor  can help. I like to structure my Spanish lessons like conversations you would have with a Spanish-speaking friend. I understand that learning a new language is difficult, and I try to encourage my students when they make mistakes. A teacher can offer extra help if youre struggling, and help you determine what you want to learn and practice. Do Your Homework! Im a firm believer in homework as a study tool. Just because the lesson is over, doesnt mean you’re done learning. Here are some things you can do on your own to practice your Spanish between lessons. Write (in Spanish) about your day, week, or weekend. Write down all the Spanish words you hear during the day that you dont understand. Ask your teacher to explain the words in your next lesson. Watch your favorite show and describe the plot in Spanish. Im Latino, but English was my main language because I used it in school. After years of practicing with my family, I managed to improve my Spanish. Im not fluent and I may not have the perfect accent, but I never gave up on learning. I encourage you to do the same to learn Spanish; challenge yourself, stick with it, and have fun! Emmanuel M. teaches Spanish online. Become A Better Listener And Negotiator With Acting Skills

Become A Better Listener And Negotiator With Acting Skills Communication Techniques: Learning To Act Enhances Listening And Negotiating Skills ChaptersActing Skills: Offering More Than Just CreativityIf you take on an extracurricular activity or start a new hobby, you inevitably gain a whole set of new skills and imagination, whilst also developing on valuable life skills. Taking Drama classes is no different and the confidence gained can have a great impact on your communication skills.different behaviours and attitudes which can be challenging to learn to cope with. While you may share a mutual passion for dramatic and artistic theatre, that doesn't mean to say that you necessarily agree with how your peers present themselves in drama school. By learning to put up with potentially loud and insensitive people in a Drama workshop, you can be sure that you can be prepared to tolerate almost anyone in the workplace! Not to mention be able to have a two-sided conversation with them whereby you each listen to each other, not interrupt one another, and manage to make joint decisions. Not to mention a boost in your creativity throu gh improv sessions that will help you think on your feet during brainstorming meetings with your bosses.Learning to listen better can enhance your communication and social skills. Photo on Visualhunt.comLearning To Act Can Help You Improve Your Social SkillsThere is nothing more frustrating than having to repeat yourself over and over again before the person you talking to finally understands or acknowledges your point, so don't be that person who doesn't fully engage in conversations or who is easily distracted by elements outside of the circumstance.Similarly, don't be that individual who is having an emotionally-loaded chat with a friend, nodding along in agreement or sympathy, but in reality is thinking about what he or she has to wear out to a party later that evening. When you have things on your mind, it can be quite easy to lose the thread of conversation and drift into your own world for periods of time. Listening is important in keeping your loved ones close, as it shows th em that you are being sensitive to their feelings and enables you to conduct yourself in a more diplomatic and responsive way. Many would say that speaking and listening are skills that are dying out thanks to digital communication, but when it comes down to it and technology fails us, our personal interaction is always there and ready for action. In truth, there are few scenarios in life where it is better to put something down in writing to convey a really important message.Though it can be sensible to put complaints and matters of a professional nature in writing for administrative reasons, there is something to be gained from sitting down and following your email or letter up with a face to face conversation.Don't you find that you are able to negotiate discounts or returns procedures much easier if you are able to have a one to one discussion with a manager rather than getting wound up by pointless emails being mailed back and forward? Drama lessons teach you well-rounded communi cation skills which means that you can remain calmer in difficult situations, listen more carefully, and react with poise and politeness (even if you have to bite your tongue!).Actor training can  teach you many of these skills through the various different types of performing. There is, for example, the Sanford Meisner or Meisner technique, Method Acting, the Lee Strasberg ideology, Stella Adler acting and the Alexander method, to name but a few. These techniques will each provide tips like relying on your instinct, embracing spontaneity in the moment, working on your improvisational reactions and projecting emotion. How To Improve Social Skills: Make You Listen And You Really HearListening is a vital skill for any performer, especially those who are often involved in improvisation work and must react quickly and feed off of others' comments. Plus, actually listening to your co-star talking transforms a scene into a more authentic performance, as opposed to just standing and waiting for cue line. The Meisner technique particularly encourages this idea of being able to participate in the present, and imagining that there is no one else in the room other than the actors on the stage.Method Acting, however, requires ongoing commitment and asks the actor or actress to become the character they have studied, working on every aspect of their on set personality, even when they leave the theatre. Preparing for a creative performance in such an intensive way and becoming the roles that your casting director has been coaching you to perform can be quite to maintain though in front of everyone you know, so train in this way is a tough exercise and requires a lot of inner strength. Not to mention supportive family and friends who can encourage you to succeed in reaching your goals! If you are dedicated to your acting training, an Emmy or an Oscar could well be yours! As a result, the scene becomes a true conversation instead of a rehearsed set of lines.Listening to your dire ctor's instructions is vital. Photo on VisualHuntMoreover, any person who watches a performance on-stage or on-screen, including TV shows, soap operas, musicals or films,  benefits from being a good listener  as taught by an acting course because it allows them to really appreciate the action and get the most from what they are watching. If you don't make the effort to appreciate a performance, then you will become a passive listener. There is a big difference between hearing and listening.Hearing doesn't require much effort whilst listening means actively processing details. Even though you may care deeply for the person who is opening up to you, your brain could skip the listening process and jump straight to problem-solving or looking for a solution to make them feel better. However, sometimes people just want a shoulder to cry on and someone to truly hear them.Educational establishments are aware of the positives that drama classes bring to their pupils and their ability to commun icate and interact in other academic lessons on the curriculum.Communication Techniques In The Workplace: Acting Makes You A Smoother OperatorActing classes teach you about the discipline of  physical movement and expression, which includes helping you to showcase that you are listening as well as helping you to actually listen in a lesson or while you rehearse, as well as on the theatrical stage. This tuition can then influence the way you act in your personal and work life.During your acting workshop, you will learn about important techniques like  posture and body language (such as smiling, making eye contact and nodding your head as nonverbal cues) as well as vocal coaching tips which help you to master the art of timing (i.e. not interrupting, summarising and paraphrasing). As such, the set of communication skills that you will develop from mastering acting techniques will make you much better in situations whereby you need that little bit of extra charm. For example, if you hav e a particularly difficult boss, then by improving how you respond to their nonchalant attitude (i.e. smiling and continuing to listen intently to their side of the argument instead of rolling your eyes and sitting back in your chair) can help you to co-exist and even to begin to work much more cooperatively alongside each other. If you are interested in signing up to a respected acting school, then you can search online for acting courses near you and read testimonials and feedback from those who have studied there and gone on to find success in an acting career or went on to pursue a different avenue.Other than helping you boost your confidence and improve your communication, acting for film, Broadway or simply for fun focuses the mind. It also provides you with the opportunity to add a dynamic craft to your resume, helps you to reign in your emotion and hone your auditioning and interviewing technique.Looking for drama classes with an acting coach?Find drama classes LondonDrama cl asses Glasgow CarlActing Teacher 5.00 (5) £55/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors NatashaActing Teacher 5.00 (8) £45/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors ElifActing Teacher 5.00 (10) £40/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors CalumActing Teacher 5.00 (15) £50/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors ChristopherActing Teacher 5.00 (9) £35/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors LowriActing Teacher 5.00 (8) £85/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors DanielActing Teacher 5.00 (6) £25/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors CiaranActing Teacher 5.00 (5) £40/h1st lesson free!Discover all our tutors

Lasagna has changed a lot over the years. (Source: DianaRadulescu)But when was it invented? The first records of lasagnas date back to the Antiquity when Greeks and Romans ate “Lagana”, thin slices of pasta cooked in boiling water. It was a bit like a pancake or pizza base.It wasn’t until much later that lasagnas started looking like they do today. In fact, in the 13th century, they were prepared in a namesake dish known as a “lasagna”. The Greek term “lasagna” referred to a cooking tripod. To make lasagna, the Italians slid a filling between each slice. By alternating between pasta sheets and filling, the lasagna’s ancestor was born. At the time, it was filled with chicken, pork, or even fish. The meat was mixed with beaten eggs as well as the fish brine. The whole thing was cooked together. There are also Arab dishes similar to lasagna that were cooked with thin pasta sheets. These were called “lauzina”. Some believe that these two words are at the origin of the na me lasagna. After the 13th century, the cheese started appearing in lasagnas.  Once the pasta changed, the way lasagnas were made also changed drastically. The most popular lasagna recipe originated in Bologna. The bolognese sauce, made from tomatoes, cheese, and minced meat, became popular all over the world. This is generally the type of sauce you’ll find in premade lasagnas all over the word.Discover some easy recipes for beginners. The Lasagna Bolognaise RecipeTo get a lasagna bolognese recipe right, you need to get the proper ingredients. Here’s how you can easily make your lasagna. Lasagna bolognese is the most common type of lasagna. (Source: RitaE)For four people, you’ll need:Lasagna sheets600g of bolognese sauce350g of minced meat1 onion100g of grated cheeseFor the Béchamel:500ml of milk2 large tablespoons of flour125g of butterStart by chopping the onion and lightly cooking it in some olive oil. Before it browns, add all of the minced beef to the pan.  Let it all cook on a high heat making sure you don’t burn the onions. Add the bolognese sauce (you can buy this in most shops). Now we can move onto making the bechamel.  To do this, melt the butter in a pot. Once melted, add the two tablespoons of flour and mix with a whisk. Pay attention because you need to do this quickly. Keep the milk beside you as you need to progressively add it into the mix.  Keep stirring as you slowly add the milk to the mix; you don’t want any lumps.  Mix until it starts to thicken. Once your bechamel is ready, add it to the meat and bolognese sauce. Now you need to put everyt hing together. Make sure you have a suitable baking dish or lasagna pan. Add a later of the sauce and bechamel to the bottom of the dish. Cover with a lasagna sheet.
