Should you take a second internship
Should you take a second internship Tips From an Orange County College Consultant: 5 Things to Think About Before Doing a Second Internship Tips From an Orange County College Consultant: 5 Things to Think About Before Doing a Second Internship Many students will be excited to have the opportunity to work as an intern while they are an undergraduate. Although many internships are unpaid, they can provide valuable work experience and help students get a foot in the door with their favorite company. The first time around most students will need enough elective units that they can justify spending part of their summer without getting paid. However, taking a second internship the following summer can be subject to different circumstances. Perhaps the student no longer needs the units or maybe they simply need to earn some money to subsidize the cost of ever increasing post-secondary education. Whatever their personal circumstances might be, itâs prudent to think about several things before agreeing to a second internship (READ: Unpaid Internships: Weighing the Options). 1. Will this internship provide additional work experience? Some students may be seeking a second internship because they learn that their original choice of major was not a good fit. In this case, an additional internship in a new field may provide experience valuable enough to be worth the effort. Spending a month or so working in the field is a great way to determine whether or not a specific career goal is a good idea. If a second internship will provide an entirely different skill set upon completion, it may very well be worth it paid or unpaid. 2. Is the internship paid at minimum wage or above? Another thing students should ask themselves is if they will earn any money over the summer. If the internship is a paid opportunity at minimum wage or above, it sounds like a good idea. Students who need to make money could either make it doing something they find especially dry or while learning valuable job skills. Paid internships are a good option. Unfortunately, the majority of undergraduate internships are unpaid. In this case, would a second internship in the same field really help the student? If they can still get college credit they actually need or if they are making excellent career connections it may be worth it. However, if its simply a repeat of the first summer, it might end up being a poor use of time. 3. Can the student use it as part of a special project with their school? Students entering specialized fields may be involved in special projects such as independent or collaborative research. If working as an intern can somehow contribute to this project, it might be a very interesting experience overall. Because each studentâs situation will be unique in this case, they should ask themselves the following questions. Will their supervising professors support their internship as part of the project? How will they describe or justify their internship within their research paper? Will they receive relevant credit toward their degree? Because there are so many variables when it comes to independent projects itâs a good idea to get something official in writing from the school and the company before proceeding. 4. Is this internship a temp to hire position? Some internships can serve as a temp to hire position. In this case, a second internship might be an excellent idea. If a company is interested in a student who will be graduating in a year and they want to offer them an opportunity to get their foot in the door prior to graduation, they may offer a temp to hire position. Although most of these come after graduation, some companies will recruit students in high demand fields. Having a full time job secured before graduation would be excellent for any student; however, its important to look at the fine print in these types of situations (READ: Why You Should Study Abroad). 5. Can the student get important information in writing? If a student is considering a temp to hire internship or a second internship, its important to make sure they get any important information or guarantees in writing. A company that says they would like to hire a student upon graduation but isnt willing to put it in an official offer may not be in a position to follow through. Verbal agreements generally arent worth much and are undocumented. If a student is truly taking on an internship because they feel they will be hired upon completion, they must absolutely have some sort of written job offer, even if there are contingencies, in writing and signed by a representative of the company authorized to make such a promise. If this is not the situation its better to think about taking the internship on as part of college credit or choosing something else to do over the summer. 7 Ways to Use Movable Guitar Scales to Write Solos and Riffs
7 Ways to Use Movable Guitar Scales to Write Solos and Riffs Sign up successful Start by targeting the notes that are the basis of the key the song is in. For instance, if youâre playing in the key of G Major, playing the G Major scale in different positions on the neck is fun, so you target the note G in different spots on the neck. It is like connecting the dots. Now move the scale up a whole step to the fifth position on the neck but still target the note G. This is a good idea as it frees you up to improvise. Step 2. Move the Basic Scale Patterns Close your eyes and visualize the neck of the guitar and play freely. When you find a pattern you like, move it up a whole step. The reason this works is because there is only two notes difference between G Major and A Major. You will very quickly see that this is both fun and exciting as it opens up new possibilities in your playing to express yourself. If you hit a wrong note simply remove it from your solo or riff idea or slide into the next note using the âwrong noteâ as a grace note or passing note. Listen carefully for what sounds good. Step 3. Give The Notes Numbers We give each note of the scale a number. For instance in C Major C is 1, D, is 2, E is 3, and so on. Now it is time to begin by playing with the idea of assigning number patterns to each scale and moving the order of the notes around. For instance you might start by playing 1, 3, 5, 2, 1. Then mix it up. Your ears will tell you what works. Step 4. Make Your Guitar Sing Many of my friends and students ask me: how do you make the guitar sing? I like to sing or hum a melody out loud first and then find those notes on the neck of the guitar. It is also useful to go to the piano and find the notes in the scale of G Major or whatever key the song is in. Then sing the melody by picking the notes out on the piano and then transfer it to your guitar! This not only makes your solo more interesting but it helps you improve your ear and song arranging skills at the same time. Step 5 : Riff This Way What is a riff? A riff is a short idea played on the electric guitar that locks in with the beat. Joe Perry of Aerosmith successfully uses riffs to make songs really appeal to his fans. Listen to âWalk This Wayâ by Aerosmith and you will hear how Joeâs riff makes the song great and propels it forward. A great riff can even double as a hookâ that keeps us coming back to the song again. The rule is learn your favorite riff from a song you love to play along to. Take your time and play it correctly even if it takes several days or weeks to master it. Step 6 : Hammer on and Pull Off Use techniques like sliding into a note, hammer ons, and pull offs to increase your tempo with grace and ease. Have your guitar teacher show you how to do this if you are not familiar with the technical aspect of playing hammer ons and pull offs. You donât have to get it all in one day. Be adventurous and take chances. If you are not on stage it doesnât matter if you hit a wrong note as this is part of the learning process and good ear training. Next time you have a great idea record it into your iPhone. It may be a million seller and bring joy to everyone in the world. Step 7: Rap to The Beat If all else fails do this: Rap to the beat. Choose some grunting noises or three or four of your favorite words and rap to a drum beat loop on your laptop. Now transfer your rap/grunt sounds to the guitar using any notes you like in first position on the neck. You are now a successful Riffmaster! Opening up to new ideas and new ways makes you a successful learner and guitarist all in one. Never underestimate your ability to learn something new and add it to your list of cool things to do on guitar. James W. teaches guitar, singing, and acting lessons in Jacksonville, FL. How Often Should You Practice Spanish To Really Improve
How Often Should You Practice Spanish To Really Improve Maile Proctor Not sure if youre practicing Spanish enough to reach your goals? Make sure youre getting enough practice time with these tips from Spanish teacher Emmanuel N The fastest way to learn Spanish is to practice and use the language as much as possible. Think about it, kids go to school five days a week from kindergarten to high school, and they use English constantly. They read, write, and learn new words and vocabulary. In order to learn a new language, you have to practice speaking, writing, and reading. You might be wondering whats the fastest way to learn Spanish, and the answer is that it depends on how often you practice and use the language. So how often do you need to practice in order to improve? My recommendation: Every. Single. Day. Find Time to Practice I realize not everyone is able (or even willing) to practice every day, but it really is the fastest way to learn Spanish. If you want to learn and improve, you need to make a commitment and find time to practice. When it comes to Spanish, just like any other skill, practice is the key to learning. This doesnt mean you need to study constantly or complete limitless assignments and homework. Make Learning Fun Learning Spanish can be fun, and its important to find a study strategy that works for you. Here are two effective learning strategies that you can try. Listen (and sing along if you want) to Spanish songs. Find videos on YouTube that have English translations for the Spanish lyrics. You can also do this yourself: find the Spanish lyrics and use Google to translate the words. This will be easier if you understand Spanish expressions, and the best way to learn this is through conversations. Watch Spanish shows and movies, or English shows and movies that are translated in Spanish. If youre a beginner, turn on the English subtitles to help you follow along. It may be difficult to understand the shows at first since fluent Spanish speakers speak pretty fast, but youll be able to understand more words and phrases as you continue to practice. Find a Teacher I have shared some ideas and suggestions to help you improve your Spanish, but at the end of the day it always helps to have someone to help you study. Not everyone has Spanish-speaking friends or relatives. This is where a Spanish tutor can help. I like to structure my Spanish lessons like conversations you would have with a Spanish-speaking friend. I understand that learning a new language is difficult, and I try to encourage my students when they make mistakes. A teacher can offer extra help if youre struggling, and help you determine what you want to learn and practice. Do Your Homework! Im a firm believer in homework as a study tool. Just because the lesson is over, doesnt mean youâre done learning. Here are some things you can do on your own to practice your Spanish between lessons. Write (in Spanish) about your day, week, or weekend. Write down all the Spanish words you hear during the day that you dont understand. Ask your teacher to explain the words in your next lesson. Watch your favorite show and describe the plot in Spanish. Im Latino, but English was my main language because I used it in school. After years of practicing with my family, I managed to improve my Spanish. Im not fluent and I may not have the perfect accent, but I never gave up on learning. I encourage you to do the same to learn Spanish; challenge yourself, stick with it, and have fun! Emmanuel M. teaches Spanish online.
